I created a backup earlier today and then tried to update my Joomla website to a version 4 level. The site crashed, and there is an issue between my host and my firewall security. Can you please help me install a backup?

Before you try restoring a backup I'd recommend deleting your .htaccess file. In most cases I've seen an HTTP 502 right after a Joomla version upgrade it was because a .htaccess rule didn't work on Joomla 4.

If this doesn't help:

  • Download all of the backup archive file(s). Please remember that your backup may consist of more than one backup files with extensions .jpa, .j01, .j02 and so on; if this is the case you'll need all of these files.
  • Remove all files and folders from your site, or at the very least the Joomla-specific ones: administrator, api, cache, cli, components, files, images, includes, language, layouts, libraries, media, modules, plugins, templates, tmp
  • Upload kickstart.php and the backup archive file(s)
  • Access the /kickstart.php URL on your site and proceed with the restoration

The second step is very important. Joomla 3 and 4 have a very different folder structure. Trying to restore a Joomla 3 site on top of a Joomla 4 site (or vice versa) will result in a broken site.

Hello,

Thank you for the guidance, we:

  1. followed your instructions below and deleted the folders,
  2. Watch the video on your website
  3. downloaded the kickstarter-core-7.2.0,
  4. made sure the php for the website was at 7.2
  5. uploaded the kickstarter.php to the FTP folder
  6. uploaded the backup file: WATERHAMMER-www.waterhammer.com-20230421-083046mdt.jpa
    1. This is a backup from Joomla 3
  7. entered the url: https://www.waterhammer.com/kickstart.php

It does not bring up the kickstarter screen.

What did we do wrong?

When I try to visit that URL I get a page from Sucuri which says it cannot connect to your server; the server returns an HTTP 502 Bad Gateway error.

Based on the information you provided, it does not sound like a problem which would be caused by something in your .htaccess file (an AddHandler or SetHandler line) since you have only deleted files, you have not extracted anything.

Therefore, by process of elimination, I have to conclude that something is broken on your hosting side. Typically, an error like this means that the server is misconfigured and cannot run PHP over FastCGI. You need to ask your host to take a look and fix this.
