I have restored dozens of sites with no issues until now. Now, I get the ajax error. Nothing different. Same host. Same procedure.

I made the website on a temp URL, as usual. I ran into a problem and had to bring back a backup. It didn't work, but I found in your docs that restoring to a temp URL doesn't work. Not yet ready to go live, but needing to finish, I bought another domain, set it up on my server and restored without issue.

I was ready to transfer to live and tried to restore on the client's URL which is on the same server. Same ajax error.

I made a backup of the original site on my client's URL and tried to restore that until I could figure this out and I get the same error trying to restore that.

I've had to temporarily redirect my client's URL to the new one. This won't work for long and I shouldn't have to use this type of workaround.

Please advise.

"Ajax error" is just a generic error condition, it really doesn't tell us anything useful about what went wrong. It isn't clear if you're getting the error during the backup or after. Exactly when are you getting the error?

If it is after the restore is complete, when you try to access the site, please edit your configuration.php file via FTP and change $error_reporting to "Development". Does that give you a more informative error message?

Clear your browser cache. Having files from the old site in the cache could cause this.

Swap your .htaccess file with the htaccess.txt file in the root of your site. This is Joomla's "plain vanilla" .htaccess file.

I finally got it. I asked in the Joomla! group on Facebook. It was suggested that I tick the "ignore most errors" box. I did and I got it back up.

Thank you. This has been resolved.

I'm glad you got it working.

One of the common causes of extraction errors are log files. They can be written to while they are being archived, which can corrupt the file itself or even the archive. In your profile's Configuration screen, in the Optional Filters section, check the last four options, just leave the top on unchecked. This eliminates log files and some other unnecessary or potentially troublesome files from your backup.
