Clean /public_html folder being restored to. Created SQL db first and checked username and password first. Data file restore works fine but at db restore get a 'Unable to connect to the Database: Could not connect to MySQL' error. Have checked, remade and checked db credentials again. No better. Have checked for $live_site in configuration.php as one of your pages selected. Still can't connect

If you are sure the credentials you are entering are correct, you may have a character in your password that is considered invalid by some of the PHP that it is passing through. Please try with a database user password that contains only a-z, A-Z and 0-9.

$Live_site wouldn't have any effect this early in the process. That would kick in when you connect to the front end of your site.

Thanks but still won't connect

There isn't a lot of magic involved at that point. 99% of problems there are wrong credentials.

Most hosts prefix the database name and user name with the account name. So if you create a database named "database" the actual name that you need to use is "account_database".

Most hosts use "localhost" for the MySQL server address. Some hosts do require 127.0.0.1 or even an actual url for the MySQL address. You would need to check with your host for that information.

What is curious is that has worked before on this site with a backup of a Joomla 2.5 site. I've tried the 127 IP but the host says use 'localhost' anyway. In cleaning up the /public_html folder could I have deleted something SQL needs to accept a login from on a script on the same server?

I can see myself manually rebuilding this site!

Thanks

SaintAgatha
You - of course - were correct. The computer name prepended contained an 'l' which I misread as a '1' : elementary mistake!

Thanks for helping

If you mean recreating it from scratch, no, that ain't happening. We have all the parts, we're having problems with the automated restoration of the database. The database dump is in /installation/sql, it is a pain to restore manually, but it can be done. The emergency instructions are here: https://www.akeebabackup.com/documentation/akeeba-backup-documentation/unorthodox-emergency-restoration.html.

One more "is it plugged in?" question: When the database connection screen is displayed, any connection data displayed is from the old, backed up site or database. If you are restoring to to a different database, you will need to put in new connection information here.

I'm out of ideas. It is pretty late in your corner of the world. I'll flag this for Nicholas and Davide to look at in the morning.
