Recently, we ran an update and upgraded our website from Joomla 2.5.22 to Joomla 3.3.1. I backed up the 2.5.22 site and restored it to a test development site so that I could run the 3.3.1 updates without impacting the live site. After running the 3.3.1 upgrade, the backend of the website is loading up perfectly fine, however the front end is a blank white screen.

I've tried multiple things, from changing the error reporting in the configuration.php file from default to maximum to adding a php.ini file trying to enable error reporting. No matter what I do, no errors appear, it's just a blank white screen.

Have I done something wrong during the site backup/restoration? I would greatly appreciate any help, I'm at a complete loss for what to do.

You are dong all the right steps. Keep in mind that changing the error reporting (you want to go to development/maximum reporting) is just to try to get the site to tell you what is wrong, it is not a cure. We're looking for an error message along with the white page.

You might also check the server error log to see what clues it might give you. Most hosts make that log available, but how to access it varies from host to host, you would have to check with your host for instructions.

Plugins can drive you crazy with the upgrade. Disable your third party plugins, beginning with the System plugins. That may clear your front page. If it does, you need to check for updates on the "guilty" plugin.

Thank you so much for your quick reply! I went ahead and updated the error settings to development, however the front end of the website is still white with no visible error.

Also, I couldn't seem to find anything recent in the error log, as the latest error ("username and password do not match") was dated back in mid June. When I went through the 3rd party components and plugins and disabled each one by one, however none of them seemed to have helped.

Is it possible that it's an issue with the mod rewrite in the .htaccess file?

Sorry, I must have been looking at the wrong error log section. In the root level, I just found a file entitled error_log.php which lists the following errors from today:

[02-Jul-2014 10:04:00 America/Los_Angeles] PHP Fatal error:
Call to undefined method JFactory::getXMLParser() in /home/odove/public_html/nysboc3/plugins/system/nnframework/helpers/parameters.php on line 102

Should I attempt to disable this framework? I'm not even sure of what it is used for.

Thank you so much for your help, I can't tell you how much it's appreciated!

dlb
If you can't figure out what plugin uses this framework, just rename the nnframework folder. That's a diagnostic step, not a cure. It is going to break whatever uses that folder, but if it clears your front page, we're making progress. Then we need to figure out what we broke with the rename.

I just renamed the nnframework folder, however it has not fixed the white screen issue. After doing so, a new error appeared on the backend: "NoNumber! Framework plugin is not installed. Sourcerer cannot function." After seeing this, I searched for a plugin named Sourcerer and disabled it - screenshot attached.

After doing this, the front end is still white. I checked the error log and it stills lists the same message:
PHP Fatal error: Call to undefined method JFactory::getXMLParser() in /home/odove/public_html/nysboc3/plugins/system/nnframework/helpers/parameters.php on line 102

Do you have any ideas on what else to try? We're on the right track but I'm not sure what the next step would be. I've tried disabling the nnframework as well as deleting it, but the front end is still white.

dlb
What else do you have installed on the site from NoNumber? I know the name, but I don't use their product(s). That looks like the smoking gun, but I don't know enough to tell you what the next step is.

Whatever your NoNumber product is, check for an update for 3.3. The solution may be as simple as installing an update for the new version.

It looks like there was a program called Sourcerer that was using the NoNumber Framework, however the plugin is not used so I just went ahead and uninstalled it. In addition, I disabled the "System - NoNumber! Framework" inside of the Extension Manager.

By doing this, I'm now receiving an error on the front end (screenshot attached). Is this a template error?

Thanks again for all of your help!

dlb
Yes, it looks like a template error. That's really odd, usually a 500 error doesn't give you any information about what caused it.

First step is to check for an update to the template.

Thank you so much!! That did it :) I can't believe I didn't think to check that first, the template needed an update.

Unfortunately, once I did the installation, it overwrote all of the custom design work that was in the original template - but the site is loading up now! YAAAAY!

I can't thank you enough for all of your help!
