Mandatory information about my setup:

Have I read the related troubleshooter articles above before posting (which pages?)? Yes
Have I searched the tickets before posting?Yes
Have I read the documentation before posting (which pages?)?Yes
Joomla! version: 2.5.9
PHP version: 5.3.21
MySQL version: 5.5.23-55
Host: HostGator
Akeeba Backup version which took the backup: Professional 3.7.2
Kickstart version used to extract the backup:3.7

Description of my issue: We have a client who has asked that we make a test copy of their site which we routinely do for others. They are on a HostGator VPS server. When we backed up with Akeeba and restored to an account we set up on their server kickstart runs successfully but when we try to access the site the URL that returns gets modified and we get a Server not Found error.

We have repeated the process, taking their backup and restoring it to our HostGator reseller account and are having the same issue. When we try to go to http://50.22.34.187/~dontest, the URL changes to http://www.50.22.34.187/~dontest/~dontest/. We've delete .htaccess and that didn't help and also looked in configuration.php and nothing was obviously wrong.

Any help you can provide will be much appreciated. If you need credentials for access please let me know.

Thank you,
Don

Hello Don,

please take a look inside your configuration file and fill the live_site variable with your site url.
Do you have any url redirection set in your site, like Admin Tools?

Davide,

Thank you for your note. I tried filling the live site variable with the site url (as this is a test site the url is an IP followed by /~account name (http://198.154.222.239/~protest). That didn't help.

We do have Admin Tools Pro installed. Should I remove the secret password before taking my backup?

Thank you for your help,
Don

Davide,

I turned off the secret word on the live site Akeeba Admin Tools Pro and made a fresh backup. I restore this to a test site and it let me in the back end but wouldn't display the front end. I disabled sh404SEF on the test site and can now view the front end correctly.

I have one question though. We have many client sites using Akeeba Backup Professional as well as Admin Tools Pro. In this instance we were building a test site, but if it had been an emergency and a site was down we wouldn't have had the luxury of turning off admin tools and making a backup. To make sure we have a restorable backup, how should we proceed with ongoing backups o sites where we are using the secret password and hiding administrator and/or does this have anything possibly to do with sh404sef?

Thank you for your help,
Don

if you were restoring on the same server (emergency) you would not have this issue, so that argument is invalid. Among servers you may have this, unless you always access your admin as http://www.example.com/administrator/index.php?secretword This is the best format to accessing secret word protected sites, not ...../administrator?secretword or ..../administrator?secretword. If you are interested why you'd have to read up about how Apache is looking for files and processing requests. note that this happens MUCH earlier than when PHP has the chance to load, let alone execute any Joomla! code which would call Admin Tools' code.

I forgot to convey the most important piece of information. Your problem happen because you are using a temporary URL for your site. Run Kickstart, do not close the first popup and read it carefully. The read our Quick Start Guide and our troubleshooting guide. You will see that we clearly warn you against using temporary URLs for restoring sites. This has to do with the way Apache handles SEF URLs. SEF URLs and temporary URLs for accessing your site are incompatible.
