Mandatory information about my setup:

Have I read the related troubleshooter articles above before posting (which pages?)? Yes
Have I searched the tickets before posting? Yes
Have I read the documentation before posting (which pages?)? Yes
Joomla! version: 2.5.9 > 3.1.1
PHP version: (unknown)
MySQL version: (unknown)
Host: rochen dedicated server
Akeeba Backup version which took the backup: (unknown)
Kickstart version used to extract the backup: (unknown)

Description of my issue:

I attempted to upgrade from 2.5.x to 3.1. This resulted in the admin and frontage loading blank. My attempts to find the cause have gone nowhere. I did notice that the 3.0 admin template does not show up in the database, but I do not know how to solve that. So I attempted to restore the backup I made before the upgrade, but Kickstarter will not open (403 error). Now I am stuck! My hope is that I overlooked something simple that your trained eye will catch easily. :)

Remove or rename the .htaccess file from your site's root before running kickstart.php

Thanks, that got Kickstart to load, but the Amazon button does not do anything, and it is not seeing our backups. :(

BTW, site root is 755.

Have you tried using Kickstart 3.7.0 which was published today?

Can you try uploading the jquery.min.js and json2.min.js along in the same directory as kickstart.php please and retry?

You're welcome!

BTW, which browser are you using? I'm trying to figure out if this is caused by some version of Internet Explorer.

Hi Nicholas,

Well, the site was restored but is still not functioning. Previous backups worked flawlessly. The conditions are nearly the same, even though we backed up to the 2.5.x version. The difference now is that the admin side shows a 500 error, "JHtmlBehavior: :mootools not supported."

Now I am really confused!

EDIT: Mostly Safari (mac) but I double check in Chrome if there are issues. The behavior happens in both.

EDIT 2: BTW, the "clean up" button did not do anything. The backup files are still in the site root.

Did you remember to delete all files and folders before downgrading the site from Joomla! 3.1 to 2.5? As noted, restoring a backup on top of a site with a different Joomla! version will NOT work and the resulting site will be broken.

You must be developing an enormous amount of patience! As suspected, I did not delete the files first. Re-restoring now... :)

We have an error in the restored site: "JLIB_APPLICATION_ERROR_COMPONENT_NOT_LOADING"

Edit: my fault. Sigh....

That's one of the components on your site not working properly (or a plugin / module trying to load a component). Unfortunately the message doesn't give enough information to understand exactly what's going on and I can't really help with it :(

What got us in trouble was attempting to update from Joomla 2.5.11 to 3.11. We used Joomla's built in updater, but it ended on an empty white page, and we could not get in to the admin or front end of the site. Our guess is that some extension caused the problem, so we have been removing whatever we can. Do you have any other suggestions for how to do this update?

I will tell you how I'd do it. Start with a copy of your site. Disable all third party modules, plugins and components (through Module Manager, Plugin Manager and Manage Extensions respectively). Also switch to a built-in front-end and back-end template. Then do the upgrade. Install new J3 compatible versions of your extensions and start enabling them one by one.
