So, I am running kickstart 3.6.0 to restore a site. And I am getting the "Your session write path and the installation directory are not writable" error, and I tried the simple things (changing permissions on the installation directory), so I suspect that the problem is in fact that the host doesn't support making the session write path writable.

What are my options at this point?

I fear that I can only do the manual restore? That sort of sounds like it sucks...

The manual restoration is virtually never used. After Kickstart has extracted the archive and before clicking on the "Run the Installer" button use your FTP script to set the permissions of the installation directory to 0777. If the message appears again try to ignore it and continue nonetheless. In most cases that trick works after clicking the Next button two or three times.

So, what I tried, was extracting the archive, when it was finished, I went and did a chmod 0777 installation and verified.

I then pressed the "Run the Installer" and got a 500 server error.

Am I missing a step?

Oh, bollocks, your server won't allow you to access folders with too wide (0775 or 0777) permissions. OK, plan B.

Again after the extraction and before clicking the button do this:

  • Create an empty text file named storagedata.dat
  • Upload it into your installation directory
  • Give the installation/storagedata.dat file 0777 permissions

Now that will work.
