Mandatory information about my setup:

Have I read the related troubleshooter articles above before posting (which pages?)? Y
Have I searched the tickets before posting? Y
Have I read the documentation before posting (which pages?)? Yes, everything I can. I think followed it to the letter. I just don't know what I'm doing.
Joomla! version: 2.5
PHP version: 5.2.17
MySQL version: 5.1.50
Host: FastHosts Shared Linux Server
Akeeba Backup version which took the backup: 3.6.4
Kickstart version used to extract the backup: 3.6.0
Description of my issue:

Blank pages on my site, both admin and site itself.

I read the trobleshooting information, but that only talks aboyu moving from one site to another, referencing .htaccess and php.ini

I tried messing with .htaccess, but as I have used Akeeba AdminTools (2.4.4), I cannot understand a thing!

I have tried doing a straight restore with Kickstart and that failed. I have tried using Kickstart with ftp, that failed. In both cases I have tried it with and without the path overwrite options enabled.

In several cases, the Database Restoration hung and I had to try again.

I'll be honest, I thought I had this worked out, but I just cannot seem to get it to work.

I did a full backup BEFORE trying to install Joomla 3.0.2
Apparently my host has decided that they will not be supporting PHP 5.3.1 for the time being. That is why I am trying to restore my site.

Any ideas?

You have to delete all files and folders before restoring the backup of your old site.

Thanks for the super-fast reply Nicholas.

I was just trying that as you replied. I had read that in the other tickets, but I'm an idiot. I was hoping an overwrite would fix it. I didn't expect a reply so soon, so really sorry to have asked before I tried everything.

I am still wondering about the database files. Do they have to be nuked too, or is it just the files in /htdocs/  ?

What about the files in the root directory (underneath htdocs)?

Probably you mean database tables? Droping (deleting) them is a good idea, but not necessary.

What about the files in the root directory (underneath htdocs)?

Don't touch them.

Thanks so much for helping.

Yes, I did mean the DB tables. I'll try it first without deleting the DB tables and see how I get on.

Have wiped the site several times now and have tried both the Direct restore and the ftp restore.

If you use Firefox there is no error displayed and the page is blank. If you use IE, I get an "HTTP 500 Internal Server Error"

In both cases the admin page is also unavailable.

The www.sitename.co.uk/weblog/ WordPress part of the site works fine, so it is just the Joomla part at address www.sitename.co.uk/index.php that does not work.

In Firefox and IE, the URL never chages from www.sitename.co.uk/

However, the admin page is also blank, but the url is www.sitename.co.uk/administrator/index.php (also a 500 error)

Totally at a loss now. Any ideas?

Thanks,

Susi

After restoring the site, download a fresh copy of Joomla! 1.5.26's installation package. Extract it on your local computer. Upload all files except the installation directory to your site, overwritting existing files. Does that help?

Hi.

Just before I do this, I thought I'd better check...

My install backup was Joomla 2.5, and I should upload 1.5.26?

Edit:

Before I do this, I've just dropped all info on the database and am trying another restore

Sorry, that was a stupid typo! I meant Joomla! 2.5.8.

Thanks Nicholas!

Selecting "Drop Tables" in the restore options did not work, but going into my Control Panel in Fasthosts and MANUALLY dropping the tables did it!
For reference, that's all I did. I did not delete the database, just clear it of all info and then do a non-ftp restore.

Thank you SO MUCH for your *AWESOME* programs and patient support. Without your hard work, I would have had weeks of troubles recreating the mess that is my website.

I cannot thank you enough. I'm a subscriber for life!

Best Wishes,

Susi xx
