For some reason your configuration.php file wasn't updated during the restoration. Please edit the configuration.php file in your site's root and enter your new site's database connection information.

Thank you for your rapid response. I have checked the config file and it appears to contain all the right information including DB name, user, prefix, etc.

I checked this before sending a ticket as I susspected it might be that.
Sorry.

Hm, this error message can't mean anything else. It's actually quite clear: Joomla! complains that it can't connect to the database. Maybe you can try toggling from mysql (no trailing i) to mysqli (with trailing i), or vice versa, in case your host only supports one of them.

If all else fails, please do what I'd do: create a new db user, write down the password (and quadruple check it), assign it to the database, triple-check the database connection information and edit your configuration.php file, entering all connection information afresh.

Can I just edit the config file to do this or do I need to run kickstart again?

Just edit configuration.php. You don't need to go through the entire restoration process again.
