Description of my issue:
I have used akeeba successfully in the past. Recently I was using Dynamic 404 extension for redirects to my new site and had some problems and restored the site prior to installation. When I re-loaded the program, I could not longer see it in the components drop down box. However some redirects still work even though I have not put the data in again. Something from the previous backup maybe is still in the database? I have attached info from the questions submitted tol Dynamic 404. Any input from you would be appreciated.

I am not sure what "re-loaded the program" means. Restoring a backup? Installing the component again? Uninstalling the component and reinstalling the component again? Are you referring to the SEF component or Akeeba Backup?

I will make a wild guess: you restored a backup of your site where the Dynamic 404 extension was not installed. In this case, its database tables and files were not removed. You have to remove them manually before reinstalling the extension. Restoring a backup does not remove files and database tables not present in the backup. It will only overwrite existing files and tabkes.

You are correct in your wild guess and thank you for the info aboutRestoring a backup does not remove files and database tables not present in the backup. It will only overwrite existing files and tabkes."

Here is what is happening right now - (I also submitted this to the joomla forum)

This has happened twice with different programs. I have created a new joomla2.5 site and am in the process of re-directing pages to the new joomla site. I installed Dynamic404 and it worked beautifully. However, I was deleting some index files, that I thought were old and one was the joomla index.php file (I thought this was an old one of mine - old site and joomla are on same root). Anyway, I used Akeeba backup and everything restored ok. When I re-installed the Dynamic404 extension there was an error message about a duplicate admin menu item, and now the extension is not visible in the component drop down menu. Next day I did the same thing again with ReDJ extension and it installed ok and was visible in the components menu. Akeeba restored all my extra index files and I deleted them again. (NOW I KNOW THE INDEX.PHP ONE IS GOLDEN!!!) Any way I reinstalled the ReDJ extension and just like before it is no longer available in the menu. Anyone have any idea? Do the Akeeba people have any ideas on how to proceed? :(

The disappearing menu item is because of a bug in JInstaller (Joomla!'s installation library) which I have reported and suggested a patch a year or so ago. My patch was rejected on the grounds that a proper fix was on the way. It never really happened :( There is a workaround which involves database editing. I have documentated it here: https://www.akeebabackup.com/documentation/troubleshooter/abinstallation.html

You're welcome! You wouldn't know how many requests of the same nature I receive every time I publish a new dot-zero release because of that old and known Joomla! bug :D
