Joomla! version: 2.5.3
PHP version: 5.3.10
MySQL version: 5.5.20
Host: WAMP server on local PC
Akeeba Backup version which took the backup:
Akeeba Backup Professional 3.4.3 (2012-03-21)
Kickstart version used to extract the backup: 3.4.1

Description of my issue:

When I tried to view my restored site using WAMP on my local pc, it kept taking me to the orginial site. So I did the following
1. Enable MOD_REWRITE
2. Delete the redirections in .htacess file
3. Modified $cookie_domain and public $cookie_path

I was able to view the site's frontend, but I could not access the Administrator Backend.

I suspect that this may have something to do with the ssl certificate (or the plugin Yireo SSL Redirection), which I enabled in the backend, but I could be wrong.

What should I be doing.

If the live_site parameter in the configuration.php file is empty or points to the local site, then it's definitely a plugin performing the redirection. Possibly it's the SSL Redirection plugin. I've never used it, so I don't know if it takes a hardcoded URL or it calculates the SSL address on the fly, therefore I can't tell you if it's likely to cause the problem. It does sound like a good candidate, though.

The live_site parameter in the configuration.php file is empty.

So what should I do? Do I ask the developer what the exact URL is that the plugin produces so that I can enter it into the $live_site's URL? Is there a way to find out what the URL is in Joomla?

Or do I temporary disable the plugin's SSL, back it up again and try restoring it a second time?

You can temporarily deactivate the plugin on your restored site without taking a new backup. In order to do that, please go to your live site (not the restored one) and click on Extensions, Plugin Manager. Find the row listing the SSL redirection plugin and take a look at the Type and Element columns. Let's say that they read system and foobar respectively. Go to your restored site, inside the directory plugins/system (where system is what the Type column reads) and look for the foobar directory and/or foobar.php file (where foobar is what the Element column read). If there's a PHP file, rename its extension from .php to .php.bak. If there's a directory, rename it adding a .bak suffix, e.g. from foobar to foobar.bak. This will make it impossible for Joomla! to locate the plugin's files, therefore not loading it (and, of course, not running it since it's not loaded!) anymore.
