Mandatory information about my setup:

Have I read the related troubleshooter articles above before posting (which pages?)? Yes
Have I searched the tickets before posting? Some
Have I read the documentation before posting (which pages?)? Yes
Joomla! version: 1.6.3
PHP version: 5.2.17
MySQL version: 5.0
Host: (optional, but it helps us help you)
Akeeba Backup version which took the backup: 3.3.10
Kickstart version used to extract the backup: (unknown)

Description of my issue: This is a new site and I am trying to push it up to our godaddy web host. I have been unsuccessful using kickstart (Ajax errors). I have uncompressed my backup to an installation folder and uploaded it to the host. I have renamed the .htaccess file and the index.php file. When I try to connect to the installation/index.php I get a 500 internal server error.

First, let's make sure we're on the same page.

  1. Extract your backup archive locally, using Akeeba eXtract Wizard.
  2. Upload all extracted files except .htaccess and php.ini to your site's root
  3. Make sure that no .htaccess or php.ini file exists on your site's root
  4. Access http://www.example.com/installation/index.php, where www.example.com is your site's domain name
  5. When the restoration completes, remove the installation directory and upload the .htaccess and php.ini files

If this doesn't work, please check with GoDaddy that the default PHP version is indeed PHP 5.2.6 or later. If it's not, please ask them to switch your account to use that version by default.

Thank you for the quick response. Looking at the extracted files there is no php.ini file.
One other thing I should have mentioned is that I used the web development tool Microsoft Webmatrix.

The php.ini file may not exist. Using WebMatrix is irrelevant to this issue, it is just the code editor and local environment quick tool. My comment about asking your host about the PHP version still stands and is more likely the root cause.

Well the site was up but there were a few things that needed changing so I started the process again.

I backed it up, ftp to the root it starts the abi, restores the database and at the when I hit next at site info it goes to a 500 (Internal Server) Error.

This sounds like the notoriously overcrowded GoDaddy server being over capacity –not surprising– and screwing up. Retry the restoration, visiting installation/index.php again (without running Kickstart).
