Joomla! version: 1.5.25
PHP version: 5.2.17
MySQL version: 5.0.92
Host: 1and1
Akeeba eXtract Wizard / Remote Control / SiteDiff version:
Remote CLI

EXTREMELY IMPORTANT: Please attach the Remote Control and Akeeba Backup log files if you are reporting an Akeeba Remote Control issue, otherwise we cannot help you

Description of my issue:
Remote CLI starts backup of database only profile. After about an hour it fails before backing up the whole database with the message: Communications Error: Please check your host name and your network status.

I have tried this on both my live site and test site with the same result, although the exact point of failure varies with each attempt. The same backup profile run manually from the site's backend runs ok.

This means that a firewall is blocking Remote CLI from communicating with your site. Remote CLI has to access a similar URL many times in a row while performing the backup. This may look like a Denial of Service attack to a firewall installed on your computer or to your site. The first thing I'd try would be to disable the PC's firewall while the backup is running. If that works, the problem is with the local firewall. If that doesn't work, immediately try accessing your site over a browser. If you get an error page or it doesn't connect at all, your host is blocking your computer's IP address because it thinks that Remote CLI is trying to attack the server.

Also note that it is possible that it is a genuine communications error, meaning that you may be temporarily disconnected from the Internet. In this case you can't do much about it other than trying to secure a more stable Internet connection.

Thank you for your prompt reply. You were right. I run Kaspersky Antivirus which appears to be happy with a small backup but running a lengthy one must exceed some Kaspersky threshold as it summarily terminates the network connection after about an hour thinking it looks like spam/malware. If it helps others with the same problem go to Kaspersky's Detected Threats and Exclusion Rules and add the backup job file (in my case backup.bat) and its local path to Trusted Applications. Kaspersky is then happy to ignore it and the Remote CLI runs fine.

Awesome! I was sure the problem had to do with an antivirus. I am glad it's all working now :)
