I backed up one of my sites www.macmedias.com and i wanted to transfer it to www.belgravia.com with a new database, when i first did it it came up with an error and on reading the forums it said re-copy the plugins directory which I did, now however i just get a blank front page, and then i can log into the backend with the original username and password, but i am at a loss as to why this is any ideas ?

Thanks Mark

Mark,

The blank page is usually a disguised error, you just can't see the error message. If you have access to the server error log on the new host, you may be able to get some additional information there.

Some servers won't allow files and folders to be flagged 777, they will throw a 500 error for any file flagged higher than 755. That isn't based on your description of the problem, that is just a wild guess.

So what file or folders would i need to check ? and change the permissions to ? also the domain i give before should have read www.belgraviawm.com, but they are both on the same fasthosts servers, but the sql servers are different
servers so i would have presumed that it would have gone across with ease.

I'm having the same problems. I made a backup using JoomlaPack 2.1 (2009-03-02). After I restored it using kickstart only the admin backend functions, the websites homepage is blank.

I can't find anything that went wrong during installation.

In the backend I cannot save changes I make to articles, the page turns blank after I click to save. It points to ../administrator/index.php.

Can you please help me?

Having a play around last night, I eventually just ftp'ed the old site to my laptop and then ftp'ed it to the new site except the configuration.php file in the root directory, this seems to have solved the problem, so I understand that this is a permissions issue, but still at a loss as to why this happens, and what file or files I could have changed permissions to for it to work.
Also I have to do this for many sites which will be similar, only the database and a few "personalised" articles will be different, so if we could get over this hurdle it would help us greatly.

Thank you
Sparky

Permissions and ownership can cause this problem. The permissions are easier, 755 for everything us usually fine. You can usually set that with your ftp client and it usually has a setting to allow you to set the permissions recursively, everything at once. If you can't change permissions with ftp, that would indicate a file ownership issue, you may be able to change the permissions from your host's file manager.

If your server is fussy about ownership, the ftp mode of kickstart will leave everything owned by your ftp user, then you can enable the ftp layer in Joomla! and it will access all files using the ftp user's rights.
