Mandatory information about my setup:

Have I read the related troubleshooter articles above before posting (which pages?)? yes
Have I searched the forum before posting? Yes
Have I read the documentation before posting (which pages?)? Many times
Joomla! version: 1.7.3
PHP version: 5.2.17
MySQL version: 5
Host: 1and1
Akeeba Backup version: 3.3.11

EXTREMELY IMPORTANT: Please attach a ZIP file containing your Akeeba Backup log file in order for us to help you with any backup or restoration issue. If the file is over 2Mb, please upload it on your server and post a link to it.

Description of my issue:
I've followed the documentation and looked at everything I can look at. I'm running 1.7.3 Joomla! and everything except Akeeba installs just fine. I've never had a problem with it. Love the software, but can't even install it.

I'm beyond frustrated at this point. I know this is shareware and I appreciate it. I've paid not only two forum memberships (one of which went unused since I didn't realize that the $10 only bought me 8 days) as well as made a donation back when you guys were called... Can't remember now. But I gave like $30 because I believe in shareware and am thankful for you guys especially.

That said, can I get some help? I'm going crazy.

Dana.

Hello Dana,

First, I appreciate your support and have upgraded your subscription to AKEEBAPRO. I write software to help people, not to become filthy rich and having dedicated, honest people like you on this forum is a huge honour.

Now, regarding the installation of the component, I suspect there is some kind of permissions conflict. Please send me a Personal Message (I am user nicholas) with the following information:
- A URL back to this thread, so that I know why you're sending me the message
- The URL to the back-end of your site
- Super Administrator login information
- FTP connection information
I will then install the software on your site and tell you exactly what the problem was and how to solve it should it arise again in the future.

Well, it turns out you had bad directory ownership and permissions. Disabling the FTP option in your site's Global Configuration did the trick.

My suggestion to fix this (trust me, it'll save your sanity later on): backup your site, move the backup to the site's root and remove all other files and folders. Upload kickstart.php and use its FTP mode. Proceed with the restoration of your site and enable the FTP option. Give your tmp, logs, cache and administrator/cache directories 0777 permissions. In all of those directories I just mentioned upload a file named .htaccess with the following content:
order deny, allow
deny from all
allow from none

Make sure that you're using your FTP programme to transfer the file. This will make sure that even though we've opened the permissions of those directories very wide (so that all extensions can write to them) a potential attacker could not exploit those permissions to hack your site.
