Mandatory information about my setup:

Have I read the related troubleshooter articles above before posting (which pages?)?Yes - I have read the Back-up Quick Start Guide and have tried to understand the full manual but I get confused and lost - don't understand all the words used. I'm not a PHP type of gal....
Have I searched the forum before posting? Yes - but it does not tell me what I think I need
Have I read the documentation before posting (which pages?)? No
Joomla! version: 1.7
PHP version: (unknown)
MySQL version: (unknown)
Host: (optional, but it helps us help you)Acenet.net
Akeeba Backup version: Pro version - just bought at end of December 2011

EXTREMELY IMPORTANT: Please attach a ZIP file containing your Akeeba Backup log file in order for us to help you with any backup or restoration issue. If the file is over 2Mb, please upload it on your server and post a link to it.

Description of my issue: Two questions
1. I moved connectwithcrossfield.com/j17Nov/ joomla site to the root(www.connectwithcrossfield.com). Now I can't seem to upload a new template in the backend. Have warning message that I don't have the path to the tmp file set. I DO have the path set (/home/connectw/public_html/tmp/)

I searched for a php.ini file but I don't have one and don't know what to put in if I do find it. Asked my host and they just told me to create a custom php.ini and upload it. Need help here. I don't know what to put in the PHP.ini file.

2. since I moved the joomla site from a subdirectory the original still remains on the server. I created a whole new DB for the root install. Can I use the /j17Nov site as a test site on the server (just like to was)??

1. Unless you post the exact error message, I have no idea what you're talking about. If you're sure you need to edit something in the php.ini file, you have to ask your host. I can't possibly know how each host is set up.

2. Sure thing.

The exact error message is "The PHP temporary directory is the directory that PHP uses to store an uploaded file before Joomla! can access this file. Whilst the directory not being set isn't always a problem, if you are having issues with manifest files not being detected or uploaded files not being detected, setting this in your php.ini file might fix the issue."

My host said this "You can create your own custom php.ini file in your accounts public_html folder. Any setting put in that one will supercede any setting of the servers main php.ini file. You can see our article here

https://esupport.acenet-inc.net/article/61

Still does not help me know what to put in the php.ini file. I know how to use a text editor and know how to FTP but it does not tell me WHAT to put in the php.ini file.

I have this set as the path to the temp file on the server tab in Joomla:

/home/connectw/public_html/tmp/

(I wish I was as talented and knowledgeable about Joomla as you are. I'm learning a little bit everyday and having folks like you give me guidance and advice helps. I am still a newbie....)

Sorry, but editing php.ini files is beyond the level of support I can provide you. The answer would require me knowing the path naming on your server. This is something your host has to help you with :(

The article referred to above:

All PHP implementations run with a default set of values for configuration variables. Such variables control properties such as the amount of memory a PHP script can use, whether to register global variables, where to store SESSION variables and much more.

Acenet's shared servers allow to you overwrite most of the default values for such variables. To do so, you need to create a file on your local machine named

php.ini

You can create this file within your favorite text editor, but it should have the .ini extension.

Once you have created this file, place any variables you wish to modify within this file and save it. As an example, we will describe how to enable Register Globals.

Within your php.ini file, place the following line to enable register globals:

register_globals = On

Lots of popular scripts require register_globals to be enabled to properly function.

You only need to add those settings which you wish to change in your custom php.ini. All other variables will retain their server-wide default value.

Once you have created the php.ini file, added your configuration lines, and saved it, you will need to upload this to your space. Be sure to place it within your script's executing directory, in other words, the same directory as the script which requires these specific settings. You can use any FTP client or your cPanel's File Manager to do so.

Once uploaded, the PHP values you have modified will take on the values you have set.

Support for hosting issues is outside the scope of Akeeba Backup's support. Since you have a problem with your host not providing adequate information to override the PHP temporary directory with a custom php.ini you are advised to contact your host's support and ask them to create a php.ini file for you. That's what you are paying them for. As for us, you're paying us to help you use Akeeba Backup. Since your site has restored successfully and the problem lies in the server's PHP setup, your issue is well outside the scope of the support you bought from us.

That said, as far as I can see you need to create a php.ini file with this line:
upload_tmp_dir=/path/to/tmp

and place one copy of it in your site's root and one copy of it in your administrator directory. The /path/to/tmp is something only your host can tell you.

HOWEVER!!! You don't need to do it. As per PHP's documentation on this config variable:
The temporary directory used for storing files when doing file upload. Must be writable by whatever user PHP is running as. If not specified PHP will use the system's default.

Therefore, your site WILL work despite this variable not having been defined. Unless you have severe problems installing extensions (of the "package file not found" type) I suggest you to let it be.
