Hello !

I've been using akeeba backup for a while now, and I'm wondering.

When i have to update my website, I used doing a backup with akeeba, restoring it and using it as prod website latly.

Is there any risk doing so ?

I mean like some errors that may happen during backup ?

But anyway i love this extension !

Hi!

Backing up a site doesn't cause the site to be modified in any way, so no, that's not a risky process.

Regarding transferring a site back and forth, the only risk is that any data created on the site between creating the dev site and restoring it back to the live site is lost. This means that if you have created an article, or if someone registers on your site, this information will be gone. But this only applies if you backup the live site, restore it to a dev site, do some work, then back it up restore it back to the live site. In all other cases it doesn't apply at all.

Tks !

Yes the pb you mentioned is true. Usually i have to update some databases and folders and everything is ok.

It's a small waste of time but so far i haven't found a better way

Yeah ! Amazing !

So if I understand:

1- I look for all database and files that I don't want to save*
2- I back up my dev site (for sure the online website too)
3- I install the backup on a /mywebsite/ along with kickstart (directly into the root folder)

4- I lauch kickstart

So kickstart will, in this case, update database and files and will use existing databases and files which have not been saved in the restoring backup.

Is it correct ?

* In my case we do a whole restructuration of the website (adding components, template modifications, components setups...)
So if i just need to keep: userinformations, events information, i have to exlcude

->(jomsocial/joomla users databases)
-> Superevents (database).
-> But I also have to look for jpg and other added files ?

Tks a lot !

Yes, you understand it correctly! Essentially you'll be doing a partial backup of the dev site (everything except the user data) and restore it on top of the live site. Ta-da! :) That's how I have been delivering the major updates to this site over the last three and a half years.

Regarding the user-generated images, you only need to exclude them if you expect them to be updated on the live site. If they are not updated, there's no point excluding them.

So if I get it the update just change the existing tabs and files adding also the new ones.

But I'm wondering.

Let's say:

-My online website is A with components 1,2,3
-My new website is B with components 1,2,4

When i will merde B and A into C I will have components 1,2,3,4 ?

In this case i will have to delete again all extensions and modules deleted on B ?

The extensions manager on the merged site will only show components 1,2,4. However, the files and tables of component 3 will still be present and you'll have to remove them manually. Or, you can remove component 3 before the restoration (strongly recommended).
