Mandatory information about my setup:

Have I read the related troubleshooter articles? Yes
Have I searched the forum before posting? Yes
Have I read the documentation before posting? Yes
Joomla! version: 1.5.25
PHP version: 5.2.11
MySQL version: 5.0.86
Akeeba Backup version: 3.3.6

Description of my issue:
Akeeba backup 3.3.6 creates a backup file (JPA format) without errors but when I try to restore it in my localhost, it generates an error "The database.ini file is not present in the sql directory, or is not readable. Database restoration cannot proceed." However, when I extracted the JPA backup file and look into the installation directory, database.ini is there in the sql directory.

Is there a way to send a log file privately rather than posting it the public forum?

Hi!

There is no need to look at the log file as, as you said, the databases.ini file is there. The problem is that ABI can't read from it. This is most likely a permissions issue.

If you are on a Linux-based system, please give the installation/sql directory 0755 permissions after Kickstart has run and before you click on the "Run the Installer" button. If you are on a Windows system, you will have to right click on that folder , click on Properties and use the Security tab to give Read access to Everybody and all other listed groups. This should allow ABI to find the file.

The only other case that this error message will appear is if you also get an error message regarding the session save path and the installation directory being unwritable. But since you've read the documentation I assume that you'd have seen that error message and the proposed solution.

UPDATE:
I followed the instructions on Akeeba Backup Guide for "Unorthodox Emergency Restoration Procedure" and after some tweaking here and there, I was able to restore the site on my localhost using bigdump.php.

However, I would like to know why it fails when I try to restore a site using kickstart.php. It would be much simpler and easier if it can be restored via kickstart.php. Thank you.

Sorry, I didn't realize that you responded while I was writing my previous post.

Thank you for the suggestion, Nicholas. I will give it a try next time.
