This file you mention is not supposed to be called directly, yet it seems that you are calling it directly. Since I am not sure what "Remote FTP Backup" refers to (I can think of three or four completely different things), please tell me exactly which steps you followed to get this error message so that I can understand the problem and help you.

OK, that makes sense now. It sounds like you have a permissions issue which doesn't allow your CRON daemon to run the backup.php file. First, make sure that you have upgraded to Akeeba Backup 3.3.4 to make sure that we're on the same page. Then try changing the permissions of the administrator/components/com_akeeba/backup.php file to 0755. This should work.

Well, this can only mean one thing: you are using the wrong command line in your CRON setup. You are trying to call the PHP file directly, but the PHP file, of course, is not an executable binary file! You have to pass it through PHP. Please do read the documentation again, very carefully. You are missing the first half of the command line there.
