Description of my issue:
I am currently backing up to Amazon S3 every night and this is working very well. I have split the backup between the joomla site (30mb) which is everything excluding the images folder. The images folder is now 660mb and growing quite quickly. this is scheduled as separate backup.

Is there a practical limit to the size of the backup archive. Any other considerations for large backup archive sizes. I have the multipart upload disabled so Amazon assembles the elements into a single file.

Thanks
Paul

Paul,

There is an absolute limit of 2Gb for a backup file on a 32 bit operating system. There is a limit for a 64 bit system, but I don't even remember the name of the unit of measure that it is expressed in (what comes after terabytes?). This limit comes from php, so it is not possible to exceed it. When your backup approaches 2Gb, you need to split it into multiple parts. I am not aware of any limit on the number of 2Gb parts that you can have in an archive file.

If you are not getting timeouts on your uploads to S3, that is the only limit that you need to worry about.
