Mandatory information about my setup:

Have I read the related troubleshooter articles above before posting (which pages?)? Yes
Have I searched the forum before posting? yes
Have I read the documentation before posting (which pages?)? yes
Joomla! version: (1.7.0)
PHP version: (5.2.10)
MySQL version: (5.1.45)
Host: (Webfusion)
Akeeba Backup version: (3.3.b1)

EXTREMELY IMPORTANT: Please attach your Akeeba Backup log file in order for us to help you with any backup or restoration issue.

Description of my issue:

I am continual experiencing a problem with backing up the Joomla site, the backup always fails on "Backing Up Files".
I do see yellow boxes flash on some page loads, and I have gone through the forum and used the url's to see if the jquery.js file exist, which is does. But if I view source on Akeeba control panel page I do not see the call to jquery.js in the code.
I have tried disabling system plugins, have disabled all of them but this does not resolve the issue, I have renamed the htaccess file to see if this helps, no help. I have changed the file permissions of the media/com_akeeba directories, no help, I have downloaded and run the test.php script to see if Akeeba can access the Backup folder, this works. I have changed configuration settings as in a forum post, no success.
Yet I still cannot make a backup.
I also cannot download an update to akeeba, the url gets to the extract stage and then I get a 500 internal server error.

Would be very grateful for your help here.

Thanks

Hi!

You have an outdated version, so let's try to update first.

Go to Extensions, Plugin Manager, find the "System - System Restore Points" plugin and disable it. Then, download Akeeba Backup 3.3.4 and install it on your site.

Go to Akeeba Backup's Configuration page and set the following:
- Minimum execution time: 5 seconds
- Maximum execution time: 3 seconds (yes, maximum is lower than minimum, it is not a typo!)
- Runtime bias: 50%

Try taking a new backup. It should be slower, but work. If it halts again, please check the troubleshooting checklist. I suspect that you may be running out of free disk space there.

If nothing of this helps, please ZIP and attach the new log file so that I can take a look.

Hi Nicholas,

Thanks for your help, backup now working!

Do you have any advice on another error I am receiving, cannot install extensions through the Joomla Extension Manager, keep getting a 500 Internal Server Error. I wonder if it is a permissions problem.

Best regards

Darren,

The 500 error is an ambiguous error from your Apache server, it doesn't tell you what happened and can be triggered by a variety of conditions. The lack of detail is intentional, someone attacking your site and causing the error doesn't get any information from it. If you have access to the server error log on your host, that will contain the actual cause of the 500 error. Without the server error log, it is a guessing game.
