I have just installed Akeeba Backup Professional 3.3.a3 but can't find the Lazy Backup plug-in within my Plug-in manager.

Is it missing from the Akeeba Backup Professional 3.3.a3 download?

The Lazy Scheduling plugin was deprecated since Akeeba Backup 3.2.5 and completely removed in Akeeba Backup 3.3.a1 and later. There are no plans to maintain it in the future.

You can use CRON jobs with the front-end backup feature to automate backups of your website if you'd like.

Oh okay - would anyone have an idea of the line of code required for a cPanel cron job?

I have just installed latest version and I have the Akeeba Backup Lazy Scheduling ? Akeeba Backup Professional 3.3.a3 (2011-06-03)

it's possible it was left over from earlier version but I uninstalled before reinstalling Akeeba Backup Professional 3.3.a3 (2011-06-03)

Are you saying we should no longer use the plug-in?

Thanks
Paul

You are correct. You should not use this plugin.

This plugin has been deprecated and should have been removed in 3.3.a1. If you are still getting it in 3.3.a3, I'll let Nicholas know to check the archive and make sure it was removed. It is possible that it was not successfully uninstalled when you removed the previous version.

Akeeba Backup 3.2.7 and earlier failed to remove the plugins upon uninstallation. Unfortunately, nobody reported it before and I only caught wind of it and fixed it when I was building Akeeba Backup 3.3.a1 :( That's why this plugin was left behind.

wget --max-redirect=10000 "http://www.swingshoes.net/index.php?option=com_akeeba&view=backup&key=passcode"

is that right?

Hosting company says that Cron wget is not usable on a shared server.

I think that they don't know what they are saying. My personal blog site http://www.dionysopoulos.me is hosted on a shared hosting account with Rochen. CRON with wget is what I am using to produce daily backups which are automatically uploaded to my Amazon S3 account. So, I beg to differ. CRON jobs with wget or curl are possible and perfectly usable on a shared server, unless you want to force your clients to pay a fortune for features they can get for half the price elsewhere.

So, what your host probably means is that they have overcrowded, overused servers and they deliberately forbid you from using CRON jobs so that they can upsell you to a more expensive hosting account level. I mean, even GoDaddy (one of the worst hosts I know of and that I would never recommend to anyone) supports CRON jobs with wget. My advice: please migrate your site to a proper host, e.g. Rochen, CloudAccess.net, iRedHOST or RackSpace CloudSites. The price difference, if any, is really worth it. Just the speed increase you'll experience is worth it let alone the other benefits of having a decent host, with a sane server setup and really helpful support.

Well I got my cron sorted - I used:

wget --max-redirect=10000 "http://www.yourdomain.com/index.php?option=com_akeeba&view=backup&key=yourkey"

I am setting up a dedicated server and can provide web space accounts for other Akeeba users for a low price - as I said this is a Dedicated server and its fast!

Email me if you would like an account with 50% off the usual hosting cost. This is NOT Spam but a genuine offer to users of this site: [email protected]

Cron update:
Some shared servers don't allow WGET because it would need shell permissions.

Alternative is to use CURL or LYNX.

Actually, none of the three tools requires shell permissions. Not only that, but wget and curl have both the same purpose: they are URL getters. cURL is infinitely more powerful than wget. But, anyway, if that works on your host it's OK :)
