I discovered that I couldn't add an extension to my site(s) so I sent a ticket to the provider. I found that I couldn't install an extension, so this was beyond any specific extension. I use Joomla's ftp layer so this seemed like a permission issue. I was right. The host dropped support for ftp when they upgraded to PHP 5.3.
It seems Admin Tools will throw a blank screen if write access is disrupted. The host, in telling me of the drop in ftp support for PHP, sent code for access to a cgi version of PHP 5.2. All is now well but I'm disappointed in their decision regarding ftp.
Thoughts on account-owned vs "nobody"-owned files & directories as far as security. I thought account-owner was more secure, especially for directories that would need world write perms. Maybe time to move to a new provider, or is ftp via php becoming a thing of the past?
thanks
