The first time I have used Akeeba Backup Professional it was a success. But a few days later I got the 404 error of Joomla.
For several times I have reinstalled the program on my website without any success. What could I do next?

What were you trying to do when you got the 404 error? For example, did you get it when clicking on Components, Akeeba Backup in the back-end or something different? What is the URL displayed in the URL bar of your browser? Please provide me with enough context to understand where the problem occurs so that I can help you. Also remember to give me the following basic information about your site:

1. Joomla! version
2. PHP version
3. MySQL version
4. Akeeba Backup Professional version

I really need them to be able to help you.

Thank you for your answer!

The URL I got before I get the 404 error after I have chosen it in the backend is:

http://---/administrator/index.php?option=com_akeeba

1. I have Joomla! version 1.6
2. PHP version /MySQL version 5
3. I have downloaded the latest Akeeba Backup Professional version directly when I got the license.

I hope you have enough information, otherwise you can always email me at [email protected]

Welcome to the broken extensions installer of Joomla! 1.6 *sigh*

There is a solution to this issue, but it is a long-winded process. Using phpMyAdmin you have to find and delete three database records in three tables to rectify this Joomla! issue. The steps to follow are:

1. First go to Extensions, Extensions Manager, Manage, find any mentions of Akeeba or COM_AKEEBA and uninstall them. It may lead to an error, but don't worry about it yet. Now open phpMyAdmin for the next three steps.

2. Table jos_assets - Find the row where the name column is com_akeeba and delete it

3. Table jos_extensions - Find the row where the type column is plugin and the element column is com_akeeba and delete it

4. Table jos_menu - Find the row where the title is COM_AKEEBA and delete it

You should now be able to reinstall Akeeba Backup and it should run properly.

Okay Nicholas thank you for you helpfull information. But how could it happen in the beginning? What did I wrong before I got the error? Is it a bug in Joomlaversion 1.6?

Under some circumstances, it is possible that one of the tables referencing the component (usually that's jos_extensions) gets corrupt, while the other tables referencing the extension do not. In this case Joomla! can not access the component and you can not reinstall it - not even by uninstalling and reinstalling. I have submitted a patch to the Joomla! 1.6 bug tracker more than a month ago but it hasn't been taken in yet. I hope that by the time Joomla! 1.8 is released it will be fixed.

Important note: Joomla! 1.6 and the upcoming Joomla! 1.7 are short term support releases. They are not rock solid and therefore not meant for deployment of live sites. The current stable, long term support release is Joomla! 1.5. The next stable, long term support release will be Joomla! 1.8. As a result, using 1.6 and 1.7 is a potentially bumpy road. Well, you just hit on one of the bumps on this road :)

I see... So could I for the site I have countered this error go back to Joomla 1.5 again? And when Joomla 1.8 is ready go up to that version?

Rolling back to 1.5 and then migrating to 1.8 is a triple effort. Going from 1.6 to 1.5 is an 100% manual process (you have to rebuild your site). Going from 1.5 to 1.6./1.7/1.8 is a semi-automated process, i.e. you will need tons of manual work to get it rolling. If you are not just starting to build this site, I suggest sticking with 1.6 and bear with the bumps. If you are just starting building this site, it's best to scrape it, start again with 1.5 and when 1.8 is out do the migration.
