I tried to run the Akeeba Backup:: Configuration Wizard and during the 'Benchmarking in Progress' the last green check mark I got was 'Optimizing Database Dump engine settings'
The bar at the bottom then turned red and said 'Last server response 179s ago'

This happens on some servers the first time you try to run the Wizard. Just run it again and it will complete the process successfully.

I have the same problem... I've tried numerous times but it times out and the wizard doesn't complete.

I am trying to run it on a very slow, free web hosting service (comli.com)

I was hoping to get the wizard to set the "fine tuning" parameters for me:
Currently set to:
Minimum execution time: 2.00 s
Maximum execution time: 1.00 s
Execution time bias: 10.00 %

So, for a (very very) slow and (very very) restricted server, what should those settings be?

=========================

I kept on trying and answered the question for myself...
I used a different browser (Chrome) and the wizard then worked fine :)

The settings that it configured for a very slow site were:
Minimum execution time: 2.00 s
Maximum execution time: 7.00 s
Execution time bias: 75.00 %

Looks like your server wasn't so slow after all. These are quite decent settings, just a tad slower than the defaults :) BTW, which browser were you using when the wizard timed out?

Hi

BTW, and 1st of all: thanks for your gr8 products!

I was using Opera 11 the first time I tried using the config wizard.

So, server settings are fast #Surprised!
Ok, so then that comli.com server has other restrictions that are blocking the Akeeba backup process :(

I've tried splitting the backup into 2 profiles to do "only database" then "only files".
The "only database" was successful, but still battling to do "only the files"... there are various errors given for each try (using Chrome):

"Backup Failed
The last error message was:
Invalid AJAX data:
"
[110102 03:50:24] -- Adding libraries/domit/xml_domit_nodemaps.php to archive (source: /libraries/domit/xml_domit_nodemaps.php)
[110102 03:50:57] Kettenrad :: Attempting to load from database
[110102 03:50:57] -- Loaded stored Akeeba Factory
[110102 03:50:57] -- Removing temporary file 80e034c5.sql
[110102 03:50:58] "

I'll check the tmp folder as suggested here: http://www.akeebabackup.com/support/forum/topic.html?id=24729
(but the restrictive server has locked me out (of only the Akeeba config page!) for now :( )

I just need a backup then I'll move away from this free hosting "service"

This issue can stem from various restrictions on your host:
1. They are most likely limiting the maximum size per file. You will have to follow all the self-help troubleshooting steps outlined in the Backup Now documentation page.

2. You most likely have very limited real space on your account. In this case, you won't be able to complete a backup.

3. Most free hosts impose a CPU quota limit. One workaround which works on many of them is to set the following Configuration setting in the Fine-Tuning parameters of the Akeeba Backup Configuration page:
Minimum execution time: 5s
Maximum execution time: 2s (Yes, less than the minimum!)
Bias: 50%
These settings will force Akeeba Backup to run each step for 1 second, then wait for 4 seconds doing nothing, artificially lowering the CPU usage. On the downside, it causes the backup to be painstakingly slow.

As you said, the best approach is to actually move your site to a "real" host ;) If you want the best hosting available, I strongly suggest Rochen Host. This is where all the official Joomla! sites are hosted on, as well as this site. They're slightly more expensive than their competition but, trust me, they are worth 10 times what they charge! These guys also run a special offer for users of Akeeba Backup. If you choose to become a client of theirs, enter coupon code "akeeba" during checkout for a 20% discount off your first invoice.

It sounds as if your site has a php.ini which limits the maximum execution time. If the Configuration Wizard doesn't work, you can still try to take a backup. If it fails, just ZIP and attach your log file here and I will tell you which configuration changes you have to do manually in the component's Configuration page.
