Hello,

I was about to do a restore using kickstart. But I was wondering if it is needed to remove current files before restoration? Or can akeeba replace the files?

What is the best method to do restoration?

Even though the restoration process (either with FTP or with Kickstart) will replace any existing files, I suggest removing the files beforehand if you have removed component, modules, plugins or templates in the version of the site you are trying to restore, compared to the one currently running on the site.

The reason I am asking this is that I have noticed that sometimes akeeba skips files when doing a backup. I have had cases where there were some missing images and pdf files in the images folder.
I have not set any exclusion settings for this folder.

I suspect that it is skipping them while backing up, which indicates that the permissions of those files (or the containing folders) are incorrect. We suggest 0755 or higher for directories (which means that 0775 and 0777 will also do) and 0644 or higher for files.

I have checked it, and it's not. Also it is not constantly doing the same files. Using .jpa it works in some cases and using .zip it works on other cases.

Example:
I used .zip and it skipped a couple of .jpg & .pdf
while when I used .jpa it skipped a modules .css file

So it is a bit inconsistent

Exactly how do you check if a file is missing from the backup or not?

Because when I install the site on a different location, those files are missing. In these cases, I could see that some images were not displayed on the website.
In the case of the css file.. well that's also something you can immediately see.

Hi rafaelravelo,
Have you tried using our Admin Tools before backing up to fix all of your file/folder permissions?

Furthermore, is it always the same site you are backing up from, or you get similar errors on different sites? It's very strange having only just a few files missing. I'd suggest trying to restore a site on a new test subdomain and also extract it locally using Akeeba eXtract Wizard. If you can see the the files extracted locally but not online, first make sure that you are using the latest Kickstart release (3.1.4 at the time of this writing). If the files are really missing from the archive, use Admin Tools to fix the permissions as Steph suggested.
