Last week my webhoster had a big problem with the server on which my website is hosted on. Now after installing a new server they put back a backup of themselves of 2 weeks old. Tonight they informed me that they will not install a more recent backup for reasons I can understand. That is ok with me because I make backups myself with akeeba of course:).

But now I would like to know what the best procedure is to install my own backup. Do I have to remove the whole website including the database and install my own backup from scratch? Or can I somehow 'update' the current (2 weeks old) website with my own backup.

Since the two versions are so close in time, there should be no need to remove the files and database contents unless you had removed extensions from your site during those two weeks. "Updating" the site is the same thing as saying "restoring". Just upload Kickstart and the backup archive on your site's root and follow the step-by-step procedures of the Quick Start Guide to restore your site. That's all that is really required.

That shouldn't be too difficult then :). I will try this hopefully shortly because today my webhoster told me that one of the problems with the server was that the databases got corrupted and therefore they restored a 2 week old backup and now I am waiting for an answer if it will be safe to restore the backup I made with Akeeba 1 day before the server crashed.

I'll bet that it was the database disk files which got corrupted, so it should be perfectly safe restoring your backup archive. Yes, it's very easy, indeed :)

Wow, this was even easier then I thought and it worked perfectly. You don't even have look for all the passwords, for example to connect to the database because it is all in the backup. I love this component :)
