I am working with xampp on windows xp to restore our hacked sites before putting them back online. My question is if I "upload" and "restore" to a different htdocs folder what happens with the databases? Are they overwritten with the "Snapshot" of the database backups?

Before restoring any database, the Akeeba Backup Installer restoration script will give you the option to define the database connection settings. In order to avoid overriding existing databases you can always create a new database on your local host and specify its connection options in ABI's database restoration page.

So to be safe I could just export a backup from myphpadmin to reload if something gos wrong rather than create a new empty database to connect and install/restore the akkeba backup too.. Thanx again

Yes, of course! This is also an option and it does work in case of an emergency.
