How or what have you used to display your google calendar on your front page?

No worries. The answer is amazingly simple: I used Joomla!'s mod_wrapper. That's right, mod_wrapper. It's so often neglected, yet it has a lot of untapped potential, like displaying the Google Calendar without having to install and configure an extension, a plugin and a module to do that ;)
