Remote backups run by cron using the native script method fail with a reference to an open_basedir problem.
In the error message (attached below) the open_basedir value is shown as
/var/www/html/:/tmp
while Joomla! System Info shows the value as
/home/myusername/:/tmp/:/var/www/html/

The reference to the base of my shared hosting appears to be missing in the error message triggered by backup.php.
Folowing is the full error message provided by cron ##text##

Your host has the open_basedir set differently for the command line php and the web based php. I'll flag this for Nicholas to make sure.

You have to talk to your host about this. There's nothing we can do from our end. Most probably, they'll be able to instruct you on creating a custom php.ini file, or do some other modification on their end to work around the problem, depending on the exact server setup.

Thanks, I'll continue discussing the issue with them.

The current workaround that I'm using is to trigger the backup is with a cron curl call using http to the front end backup option. I found that it worked for me after setting the curl options as follows:
curl -b /tmp/cookies.txt -c /tmp/cookies.txt -L --max-redirs 10000 ""

This is also documented. I guess you picked it up from the documentation?

I sure did! It is worth mentioning that the documentation is super helpful.
Thanks.
