Hi,
Love Joomlapack, but came here to see if it offers auto backup to S3 (yay!).

But I'm curious about the 'beta' stamp on Akeeba. Joomla extensions always say, "Don't use a beta on a live site..." How does Akeeba compare to JoomlaPack? Is it "just the next release" or is it quite different (& buggy)? $40 is nothing for the peace of mind that my site is backed up, but I want to make sure "beta" doesn't mean "my backups might not restore." Could you enlighten me on the stability of Akeeba vs JoomlaPack?

Second, does Akeeba automatically delete old S3 backups? Like JoomlaPack does, & only keep the last ~5 backups, or will my S3 account keep filling up until I manually delete files?

In some ways Akeeba is the next version of JoomlaPack. There are sections that have been extensively redone, so there are some major changes too. There have been frequent version releases during the beta cycle as bugs were found and fixed. There were some critical bugs in the alpha series, those are replaced with a new version as soon as they are found. Nicholas released rc1 yesterday, so we're getting very close to a stable release.

Akeeba will not manage the backup archives on s3 at this time. You have to manually delete the old backups.

If you want to get a look at Akeeba, install the Core version, it will coexist with JoomlaPack. You won't get the s3 backup with the free version, but it will give you a pretty good idea. The one "gotcha" in having both Akeeba and JoomlaPack installed is that they don't know about each other. Both will back up the other's backup files if you don't manually exclude the other's Output folder. :)

Thanks for the info. Hopefully managing S3 backups is on the wishlist. If not, please add it :)

I'm sorry, the s3 backup feature is available now, but only in the Pro version. You can back up to s3, Dropbox or an ftp server. You can explore the changes to Akeeba in the Core version, but you need Pro to do the cloud backups. Stable should be later this month.
