I can't seem to be able to download the log file, but I understand what the problem is. There is an issue affecting both 3.0.a1 editions. You have to visit the Configuration page, click on Save, then proceed to backup. You must also make sure that the output and temporary directories you have chosen are writable.

Hi Nicholas,
It still fails, same error. The log file link now works
Also, I think when I get this error, it changes my sites file permissions.
Everytime I have this error, I cant paste the log file. I have to re-apply file permissions 755 to all directories and files to be able to paste the log file - maybe its not linked, not sure

You won't believe me at first, but the problem is due to JoomlaPack, not Akeeba Backup :D
Well, here's the deal. Akeeba Backup only knows about itself, so it only excludes its own output directory from the backup. However, you have your JoomlaPack backups in the default JoomlaPack backup output directory. Remember the warning which implied that this is a bad idea? Well, now it's the time to prove this point. Joking left aside, Akeeba Backup treats JoomlaPack's default output directory as any other directory and tries to backup all the files inside it. No wonder, it runs out of disk space and crashes.
So, the easy way out is to go to the files and directories exclusion feature of Akeeba Backup and completely exclude administrator/components/com_joomlapack/backup or at least its contained files. That's all. It'll work!
