EXTREMELY IMPORTANT: Please attach a ZIP file containing your Akeeba Backup log file in order for us to help you with any backup or restoration issue. If the file is over 10MiB, please upload it on your server and post a link to it.

I thought I was using the pro version, I uploaded the key and installed it etc.

This morning it said "backup out of date" so I ran it manually.

Before I got the pro key, when it said "backup out of date"

there was a banner at the bottom that said something like:

if you don't want to see this message up grade to the Pro version

which is what I thought I had in the first place.

What do I need to do so it backs up on it's own?

Q2: Is there a manual or something so when I have time I can figure out what all of the other settings do

and if or how I should use them?

Thanks!

We of course do have full and detailed documentation for Akeeba Backup under Support, Documentation, Akeeba Backup for Joomla on our site. There are also the video tutorials under Support, Videos, Akeeba Backup for Joomla.

Upgrading from Core to Professional: See video tutorial (https://www.akeeba.com/videos/1212-akeeba-backup/1617-abtc03-upgrade-core-professional.html) or documentation (https://www.akeeba.com/documentation/akeeba-backup-joomla/upgrade-to-pro.html). Whether you have the Core or Pro version is visible in the Akeeba Backup main interface (the Control Panel page), see the right hand side where you can see whether it reads Akeeba Backup Core or Akeeba Backup Professional.

Setting up automatic backups: There are several methods. One is shown in this video tutorial: https://www.akeeba.com/videos/1212-akeeba-backup/1623-abtp02-automating-backup.html The other methods are listed in the Schedule Automatic Backups page of the component which also links to the relevant documentation page. The documentation pages for this feature can be found at https://www.akeeba.com/documentation/akeeba-backup-joomla/automating-your-backup.html
