Just a question.

Where do I create a backup directory so that Akeeba that does not produce a warning?

I can't put it in the default area.

I can't put it within the site root.

I can't put it outside the site root.

I can't put it outside of my web root. Or can I?

Where am I supposed to put it that will not generate a warning?

You can put it outside the site root, and that's the recommended way in our documentation. In fact, we tell you that the best place is a directory next to (not inside) your site's root. Why do you say you can't? Is it a misunderstanding, or do you mean something different?

Forgive me, but it may be a misunderstanding. The documentation might have been a little confusing to me, and every time I attempt to establish a new location for the backup directories, I get a warning of some kind. I'll consider your response definitive and this issue resolved. Thank you for your patience.

Okay, here's why I wrote.

I'm attempting to establish the backup directory outside of my site root. Here's the message I get:

Note: This directory is outside your site's root. Its contents may be unreadable.

What does this mean, exactly?

All right, this is not an error, it's a reminder that on _some_ servers the directories outside the web root _may_ be unreadable. This is on servers which still use open_basedir restrictions instead of proper security. When that message was put in there, these hosts were about a quarter of all hosts out there. These days, they are more like 0.5% of hosts out there. Obviously, if you select the folder and it works your host isn't affected. So just go ahead and try it.
