Hi,

I hope this is a simple question to answer.

I have now completed upgrading a site from J3 to J4.  I began this by installing a clone of the J3 site on a Wampserver on my PC. (Using kickstart and a backup copy of the live site)

I now need to move the J4 version back to the live server.  I propose using Akeeba to take a backup copy of the new site, upload it to the SiteGround server and then  use Kickstart to install it.

However, the live site still has the J3 version installed.

I presume I will first need to delete all the existing Joomla files on the J3 site, but what about the database?  Should I delete it and start again, or will Kickstart do that for me?  (I'm not sure how to delete the existing, so hope Kickstart will do it for me!)

Many thanks

Please do remember this: Kickstart = unzip.

Kickstart only extracts the backup archive. It does not restore your database. This is done by ANGIE, the restoration script which is put inside your backup archive at backup time. This information is in the documentation and printed every time you run Kickstart.

I presume I will first need to delete all the existing Joomla files on the J3 site, but what about the database? Should I delete it and start again, or will Kickstart do that for me? (I'm not sure how to delete the existing, so hope Kickstart will do it for me!)

You are spot on about the files. Delete all of them.

About the database, you don't have to delete the tables yourself. When you reach the Database Restoration page look at the top right of the main content. There's a "WIth Existing" option. Select "Drop All". This tells ANGIE —the restoration script— to delete all tables in the database before it restores the database content from the backup.

Many thanks, all now sorted.  In the end it was problems with User Names and passwords that caused the most problems bu got there in the end.  Now running J4 on live site.
