Everybody will be able to see its contents. Do not include usernames, passwords or any other sensitive information.

Is it possible to split the backups files into smaller files?
The reason is my backups are currently around 2gb (normally two 1gb jpa files), my web host has restricted ftp downloads to 500mb (currently looking for a new host!). If I could split the backup files into smaller 500mb pieces I could download them.

Hello,
yes, that's possible, it's even the recommended when creating large backups. The option you're looking for is called "Part size for split archives" and you can find it in the Configuration page.
