Is it possibel to use any backuponupdate.xml file or is this file site-dependent?

Are we talking about the XML manifest of the System - Backup on Update plugin in the plugins/system/backuponupdate directory? This is a common file that's shipped with our software. You can download the Akeeba Backup ZIP package, extract it, then extract the file plg_system_backuponupdate. Take the file from there and put it in your site's plugins/system/backuponupdate directory.
