Hi,
our site stopped working for unknown reasons. We tried to run our lastest Akeeba backup and it didn't work. We have tried different versions of our Akeeba backups and none of them have worked so far.
After running the restoring tool, we have got "Error" and sometimes "rt_supra error" which is our (out of date) RocketTheme template.

We try a clean installation of Joomla in a subdomain and worked well.

- our site runs on a VPS (Midphase)

Please advise.

Thanks,
Ivan

Hello,

if you perform a restoration on a clean folder, does it work? From what you're describing, it seems that there's some "extra" file that is not included in the backup that is causing issues. Restoring a backup will not delete the existing files, so that could be the main cause.

I'd suggest to restore a backup on a empty subfolder first, just to understand where's the problem. Is it possible to have a copy of that backup and connect to your current site?

Hi Davide, I will run kickstart from a clean directory and let you know if that works.

Is there a way to exclude folders when restoring?

Thanks.

kkoger

Davide,

We have uploaded and kickstart file and subsequent .jpa file into a clean folder. When running the kickstart file, it stops and gives us the following screen (see Kickstartimage1). We've tried running a couple of different jpa files into different clean folders.  We've never experienced problems like this and have been using Kickstart and Akeeba for several years without any problems.

I have no problem sending you the jpa file for you to take a look at or even giving you access to the backend file to help troubleshoot what could be going on. Just let me know what you would like next.

Ok, can you please upload the JPA somewhere and paste here the share link? So I can try to extract it locally

Thank you for the archive, I was able to extract it locally without issues, so at least we know that the archive is not corrupted.

I suspect your host is applying some kind of resource usage limit, so if you create a large number of files in a small amount of time the request gets blocked. I'd suggest to apply the instructions in the help text in the Minimum/Maximum execution time:

Increase the minimum to 3 if you get AJAX errors. Increase the maximum to 10 for faster extraction, decrease back to 5 if you get AJAX errors. Try minimum 5, maximum 1 (not a typo!) if you keep getting AJAX errors.

Davide,

Just to clarify, do you mean the min/max and settings detailed here? https://www.akeeba.com/documentation/akeeba-backup-documentation/requirements.html

No, the ones inside Kickstart control panel, see attachment.

kkoger

Davide,

I was able to successfully complete STEP 5 of the Kickstart and I set the minimum execution time to 3 and maximum to 5. When I got to STEP 6 Restoration & Clean Up, I experienced a "no" in the Database Support" check (see image KickstartStep6). I also noticed that Native ZIP support was off.  Neither of these have I had any problems with in the past during a restoration. I know these are settings on the server side but where do I need to navigate to to fix these? And specifically what do I need to do to fix the database support? Ken

kkoger

Davide,

We've been able to solve the Zip issue but still struggling with the database support check. (see image) Thoughts?

Ken

kkoger

Davide,

Just a final update. I have been able to successfully restore the site. I've checked and both the front end and back end are operating normally.  It seems the database support issue was due to the fact we were attempting to extract and restore to a completely "clean" folder. I just went back to our original public_html folder and ran the extractions and restoration from there and all worked fine. Thank you for your help with this. I really do appreciate it.

Davide,

I'm not out of the woods yet....Everything seemed to be working fine, so I went to Akeeba to run a new backup. The backup failed ( see attached screenshot). THoughts?

Ken

kkoger

Davide,

Also I wanted to let you know that I tried to attach the log file to my previous message and I kept getting some type of bug from your system when attaching two files. Therefore, I'm attaching the log file to this message.

Looking at your log, it seems it's creating a lot of queries to retrieve the data from the database. After some time, the database server drops the connection.

First of all, can you please check the value for the option "Number of rows per batch" under the "Database backup engine" section? It should be set to 1000.

kkoger

Davide,

The number of rows is set to 1000 (see image)

tampe125
Akeeba Staff

Ok, I was checking if your default values were the correct ones.

Looking at your log, it seems that the table it gets "stuck" is the easyblog_revisions one. We have to options here: you can try to slow down your backup so it will consume fewer resources or you can try to exclude that table from the backup. Is it really necessary?

Just to be clear: Akeeba Backup can handle it just fine, but the load that it imposes on the database server is too much and it returns an error, so we have to find a workaround for that.

kkoger

Davide,

That table is of use for the site. So I would probably want to keep it. Therefore, how would I slow down the backup so that it consumes fewer resources?

Ken

tampe125
Akeeba Staff

Ok, let's try this trick. Set the following values in your backup profile:

Minimum execution time: 5 seconds
Maximum execution time: 3 seconds
Runtime bias: 50%

Yes, minimum is greater than maximum, that's not a typo. It means that the backup process will take extra steps while backing up your site, taking more time and thus using fewer resources in the same amount of time.

Let me know how it goes.

Let me connect to your site so I can try to do some tests.

I have made this ticket private so that only you and me can see the information posted here.

Please provide me with the following information:

  1. The URL to your site's administrator login page
  2. Super User username and password
  3. FTP connection information

Please allow up to one business day (GMT+2 timezone) for me to log in to your site and debug this issue. When I'm done I will post back. Once the issue is fixed, you can revoke my access e.g. by changing the Super Administrator and FTP passwords.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION
In order for me to help you fast and accurately, please provide the information by copying the form below, paste it into your reply and fill in the information:

----- Access Information Form -- START -----
Super Administrator access

  • URL to site's administrator page (e.g. http://www.example.com/administrator?foobar):
  • Super User username:
  • Super User password:

FTP connection information

  • FTP methods supported (e.g. FTP, FTPS, SFTP):

Davide,

I thought I had provided all this to you yesterday, but it seems I didn't. Sorry about that. Let's try this again.

We have both a LIVE site and a SANDBOX site. We're experiencing the problem on both. I would say just focus on the LIVE site and then I can re-stage the SANDBOX.

I was able to connect and run some tests. I lowered the amount of rows retrieved from the database to 100 and it seems to do the trick.

I stopped the backup because it was taking too much time, but it successfully completed the database step. I changed the profile #4 , can you please give it a try?

kkoger

Davide,

I was successful in running a complete backup, but took about twice as long as it normally does. Is there anyway to speed this up?

tampe125
Akeeba Staff

Awesome!

Now that we have it working, we can try to speed things up. Take a look at the minimum/maximum execution time in the profile. Try to set the minimum to 1 and maximum to 7. Then keep raising the maximum until you reach 20 seconds. That should speed up things a little.

kkoger

Davide,

I followed what you outlined and it did improve. Yesterday the successful backup took 50 minutes. Today, I was able to run the same backup in 14:27 with a min. exec. time of 1.0 and a Max. Exec. time of 7.00. I did run it again but bumped up the Maximum to 14.00, but it really didn't change the length of time to complete. It finished at 14:05 vs 14:27. I will try increasing the Max to 20:00 tomorrow. Are there other settings I should tweak to improve the performance?

Ken

tampe125
Akeeba Staff

mhm... no.

I suspect the bottleneck is on your database: since you have that table with so many data in it, we can only process 100 rows at the time, so we can't speed up things any more.

kkoger

Davide,

The database portion of the backup seems to run fairly quickly. It is the portion of the files that takes the longest. Anyway, I will be attempting a backup bumping up the Max Execution Time to 20.00. I'll let you know how it goes.

Ken

kkoger

Davide,

I successfully ran another backup this time setting the Max Exec. Time to 20:00. It did reduce the previous backup time from 14minutes down to 11 minutes. I can live with that. Thank you so much for all your help with this case. I appreciate all the hard work.
