My host's support team was helping me with my CRON backup and fount this ticket #36049 which indicates that for CRON to work you must have the Akeeba Backup Console plugin enabled. The documentation for automated backup does not seem to mention the plugin. I would suggest providing a warning on the "Schedule Automatic Backups" page and also adding something to the documentation about this. It would have saved me a bunch of time!

Great product though, thanks.

It's in the documentation since the first day we published Akeeba Backup 9 for Joomla 4: https://www.akeeba.com/documentation/akeeba-backup-joomla/akeeba-backup-cli.html#cli-conventions

First of all, you need to know two things: how you can run PHP CLI on your server and the path to your site. If unsure, ask your host or system administrator. Assuming that you can run PHP on your server by typing /usr/bin/php and that your site's path is /home/mysite/public_html you can run the following command to list all available Akeeba Backup CLI commands:

/usr/bin/php /home/mysite/public_html/cli/joomla.php list akeeba

If you get an error reading

There are no commands defined in the "akeeba" namespace.

you will need to publish the Console - Akeeba Backup plugin on your site first. If you get a different error you need to make sure that the PHP command you are using is correct, it is in fact the PHP CLI (not PHP CGI) binary and that the PHP version it runs is the same you are using on your web site.

Thanks Nicholas, that is helpful. In my defense, I arrived at your documentation site by clicking the "Read the documentation" button which is found on the "Schedule Automatic Backups" page in the control panel. It takes you to this page which doesn't mention the plugin: https://www.akeeba.com/documentation/akeeba-backup-joomla/automating-your-backup.html#native-cron-script

As a long-time user of the Joomla 3 version I was not aware of the extensive CLI documentation. Thanks again.

That's a fair point. I will add the information about the plugin in there as well.

Thank you for your feedback!
