Please look at the bottom of this page (under Support Policy Summary) for our support policy summary, containing important information regarding our working hours and our support policy. Thank you!

EXTREMELY IMPORTANT: Please attach a ZIP file containing your Akeeba Backup log file in order for us to help you with any backup or restoration issue. If the file is over 2Mb, please upload it on your server and post a link to it.

I get the following error when I try to update installation through Extensions: update tab.

Warning Copy file failed Package Update: There was an error installing an extension: com_akeeba-pro.zip Before updating ensure that the update is compatible with your Joomla! installation.
You are strongly advised to make a backup of your installation before you start updating.   Other packages are updated normally.   I'm not sure what exactly do I need to paste in the question since there are no logs associated with that action.

Please keep in mind that extension updates are discovered, downloaded and installed by Joomla itself, using code that's under the absolute and total control of the Joomla project. Likewise, extension installation is using code that's under the absolute and total control of the Joomla project. Akeeba Ltd can not and does not have any influence on that code. We can provide very limited support for third party issues happening in and handled by code we have not written and is not under our control.

The message you are receiving tells you that Joomla can't write a file or folder that's part of Akeeba Backup. It does not tell you which one. Considering that this package has already been installed in dozens of thousands of sites without a problem it's fair to say that this is not a problem with our packaging but something that's going on with your site. Most likely one or more of the folders have the wrong ownership and/or permissions; or a directory/file entry is corrupt at the filesystem level. We do not have control over any of that. At best, we can give you a possible workaround.

Delete all files and folders under administrator/components/com_akeeba EXCEPT for the following:

  • administrator/components/com_akeeba/backup (backup output directory)
  • administrator/components/com_akeeba/BackupEngine/serverkey.php (encryption key for the Akeeba Backup configuration settings)

Delete the folders components/com_akeeba and media/com_akeeba

Then retry installing the update.
