EXTREMELY IMPORTANT: Please attach a ZIP file containing your Akeeba Backup log file in order for us to help you with any backup or restoration issue. If the file is over 2Mb, please upload it on your server and post a link to it.

Description of my issue:

Copy file failed Package Update: There was an error installing an extension: com_akeeba-pro.zip I tried downloading the version and still get this message.

Please note that extension update is the same as installing an extension. Joomla runs the exact same code either way. Furthermore, do note that extension installation is performed by code in Joomla itself. We have no say on that code – trust me, I'm trying to convince Joomla core committers to implement a one-line fix to a notorious issue that's been the bane of my existence for the past five years.

Having installed and update Akeeba Backup on a number of sites myself (including this site right here) I can tell you that there seems to be no packaging issue with our software. That is to say, you are not receiving this message because we forgot to add a file or referenced a non-existent file in the XML file that tells Joomla which files and folders make up our extension.

This means that the copy file message comes from Joomla itself, typically because of a directory or file ownership/permissions issue. I have written the following troubleshooting instructions which apply to all extension installation / updates in Joomla: https://www.akeebabackup.com/documentation/akeeba-backup-documentation/installation-updates-upgrades.html#installation-troubleshoot

I hope this information helps!

I have posted this error on the Joomla forum and it appears to have the Masters "stumped". I also tried the Direct Link install and got the same message. Can I make the one-line code change you reference?

The one line code change is unrelated to your issue. I was making a different point. What I was saying is that we have zero control over Joomla's extensions installer/updater code. To drive the point home I brought an example about an unrelated issue with a trivial fix that 5 years on I still can't convince the Joomla maintainers to merge.

Regarding your issue, try installing another extension. Does that work? If not, have your host check that the ownership and permissions of all files and folders on your site allow PHP to write to them. If that still doesn't help, have them check the server drive for errors (i.e. run fsck, the filesystem check tool available to system administrators).
