Description of my issue:
Akeeba Backup ignores user setting 'get system e-mails NO' - all super users get frontend backup notification e-mails, if no specific e-mail address was stated in options.
Please fix that issue quickly - thank you!

Do you mean the Joomla setting? Yes, it is ignored. It has always been ignored. It's not a bug, it's the way this feature was designed on purpose (I'll get into that in a second).

If you want only specific people to receive an email please follow the documentation instructions. Go to Components, Akeeba Backup, Options, Front-end Backup and find the option "Email address". Set it to a comma-separated list of Super User email addresses you want to send emails to. Anyone else won't receive an email. If you do not want anyone to receive emails set "Email on backup completion" to No.

So, why do we have this seemingly paranoid feature? For the longest time Joomla was creating Super Users with the "Receive System Emails" option set to No by default. Moreover, the description of the setting was misleading until circa Joomla 3.3 if I recall correctly. We had a lot of people who were complaining that they receive no email. Even now, we have sites which have been continuously updated from early Joomla! 3.x versions or even as far back as Joomla! 1.5. There are still Super Users set up to not receive email and they have no idea. So, the only thing we could do was to change the behaviour of our software to ignore the “Receive System Emails” option and send emails to all users with the Super User privilege set on at least one of the user groups they belong in, i.e. all Super Users.

Hi!
Thank you for your quick reply and your extensive explanation.
I followed your advice.
By the way: Is the list comma-separated, only, or can I use semicolons, too?
Kind regards,
Gerald
