EXTREMELY IMPORTANT: Please attach a ZIP file containing your Akeeba Backup log file in order for us to help you with any backup or restoration issue. If the file is over 2Mb, please upload it on your server and post a link to it.

Description of my issue:

General enquiry before spreading the word to my contacts encouraging them to use Akeeba Backup Pro.

I don't want to use FTP or SFTP to download backups or restore backup files to the server.

Instead I want to use cPanel File Manager to download/upload JPA & JPS files via HTTPS.

Am I correct in believing that download/upload by HTTPS will NOT of itself damage/corrupt the content of a JPA/JPS file?

Sorry if this seems like a stupid question but did not see any reference in the Manual or the excellent videos about using cPanel File Manager as a substitute for FTP / SFTP.

Hello,

what could potentially corrupt your archive is your browser, not your connection method. There are several addons (and antivirus addons) that could mess around with the archives while they are downloaded, that's why we strongly suggest to use an FTP client.
That's why downloading them from your CPanel or your Joomla backend doesn't change anything: you're still using your browser.

That said, getting the archive corrupted is a very low chance. Let's say that if you want to be 100% sure, you should use FTP, using your browser you're safe in the 95% of the times. It's a bit like when Windows alerts you to unmount your USB driver before removing it: it won't explode if you forgot to do it, but then don't complain if once in a while your USB disk gets corrupted :)

Hi Davide,

Thank you for the very quick response.

I'll see how we do for a while using cPanel File Manager (via the dreaded browser) and test restore a few times.

Prior to using Akeeba Backup I was using cPanel Backup Wizard.

And then downloading a ZIP file (via the dreaded browser).

Are ZIP file backups at the same level of risk when downloaded in this way?

Yes: to be honest any file downloaded using the browser could be corrupted. But when we're talking about backups, you really don't want to lose maybe the last copy of your site... Moreover compressed/binary files usually are triggering all antivirus sensors, since they contain compressed data.
However, as previously said, it mainly depends on how you setup your environment: if you have extensions, antivirus, which kind of antivirus etc etc
