FYI while testing the 3.9 release I find I am unable to install akeeba backup. On the installation page of joomla I receive "server error". Since attempting to install akeeba the front page is now blank with no errors showing. Tried changing php to 5.6, nothing changed. Thanks G Styles.

Admin tools says : Akeeba Framework-on-Framework (FOF) version 3 could not be found on this site
This component requires the Akeeba FOF framework package to be installed on your site. Please go to our download page to download it, then install it on your site.
I have installed this and it shows in libraries folder and I can see it in Manage.

Found the logs folder was missing from the vanilla joomla install, created and akeeba now installs.

Please note that this is a Joomla! bug. Joomla cannot work without a writable logs folder. This is a known limitation / feature. The fact that no logs folder exists in the distribution makes it a packaging bug in Joomla!. There is nothing we can do about it. The error you get from Joomla is generated before it can extract our package. As a result any code we could possibly add has not been even extracted from the package, let alone have the opportunity to run.

Generally speaking, 99% of the installation issues have to do with Joomla! bugs or server / site setup and cannot be worked around exactly because they do not occur in our code. If you have an issue with extension installation always check your server setup, your site setup and your Joomla! configuration. The likelihood that the extension developer can help you with anything ranges from extremely slim to practically non-existent.
