EXTREMELY IMPORTANT: Please attach a ZIP file containing your Akeeba Backup log file in order for us to help you with any backup or restoration issue. If the file is over 2Mb, please upload it on your server and post a link to it.

Description of my issue:

All Akeeba Logfiles are empty so did not upload.

I get the following error when I just wanted to validate the JPA archive: 'This file does not seem to be a JPA archive.'

So I tested a few older backup versions and in all cases the same error. One of the archives tested is actually working and has been used for a previous restoration. So nothing wrong with the archive.

Seems to me a bug in the latest version of "AkeebaPortableToolSetup.exe" I downloaded today.

Arno

Can you extract that backup archive with Akeeba Kickstart?

There is no problem with restoring the JPA archive. Just to make sure I just tested a full site transfer to a (spare) test domain. All is working and a 1.45 Gbyte JPA backup set with 30 files of approximately each 50Mbyte installed without any problems using Akeeba Kickstart Professional 4.2.0.

The age of the JPA archive is not an issue. I just tried extracting a backup taken from our site in 2012 on Joomla! 1.7. Just for kicks I tried several other backup archives taken in 2017, 2016 and 2015 on our and other sites (including my blog), single- and multipart. I tried an even older backup taken with Akeeba Backup 3.2. That's important for me because there was a slight change in the JPA format between 3.2 and 3.3. I finally tried extracting a backup taken with JoomlaPack 2.1 on Joomla! 1.0 back in 2009. In all cases the backup extracts successfully.

Is it possible that you were missing a backup archive part or the permissions of the folder or the backup archive itself didn't allow the application to read it? I can't see any other reason why that would happen.
