Description of my issue:

I have a 3.4.8 Joomla site hosted on a Godaddy shared server.

It was crashing, because they said the content and the database are on separate servers.
So they sold me an upgrade to a C-panel server.

Since the upgrade to the C-Panel Server, Akeeba Backup is not functioning properly.
It seems to run my I/O Usage and Memory Usage status bars in the C-Panel control panel to the limit.
It becomes very sluggish and slow around 75% finished and eventually times-out.
I can not complete a backup.
I tried upgrading the Godday site's resource level to 2 and then 3.
Its Was Expensive.
Akeeba Backup still pegs the I/O Usage and Memory Usage status bars

The Godday people seem to think it's because the C-Panel server does not have the
php function OPENDIR installed. And they can not install it on this shared server.

They are trying to sell me an upgrade to their Business Server.

What can cause Akeeba Backup to freeze like this and use up all the resources?
What should I do?

Thanks in advance

I think that they are playing you for a fool. What they are saying makes no sense because a. we are not using opendir and b. if that was the problem you'd have a problem with the backup crashing at the start due to a PHP feature being unavailable.

Without a log file we don't really know what is going on. Please do ZIP and attach your backup log file and we'll get more insight into what's going on.

FWIW, you can find a much better host for that kind of money you're paying. Take a look at (in no particular order) SiteGround, Rochen or CloudAccess.net. We've used all three of them, the first two being the current hosts of our site and my blog site respectively. The first two are cPanel based and we never had any serious problem with them, no matter how big the site.

Zipped Log file is attached.
I was able to complete this backup, but it did hang up for a LONG time at 73% finished.

Also attached is a screenshot of my c-panel resources, showing I/O USAGE is maxed out during this
slow time.

Thank you

I can not see that attachments are making it to you. Tried twice. Very small 320kb.

The log file did make it and we now have a good idea what's going on. You are backing up some really big files you needn't be backing up.

First of all, you have a directory "joomla" inside your site which presumably has a copy of your site. Inside it there's a big backup archive, too. I would recommend using the Exclude Files and Directories to completely exclude that folder from the backup.

I also see a hidden file in the root of your site, .pureftpd-rename.23897.fde97816 which is about 28 Mb long. I believe you don't need to be backing this up. If it's still present please exclude it with the Exclude Files and Directories feature.

If the backup gets stuck again please send me the new log file and I'll give you more directions. I have a lot of tricks up my sleeve still :)
