EXTREMELY IMPORTANT: Please attach a ZIP file containing your Akeeba Backup log file in order for us to help you with any backup or restoration issue. If the file is over 2Mb, please upload it on your server and post a link to it.

Description of my issue:

This is in response to ticket #25244. I am having the same issue where the final restoration gets stuck while updating the .htaccess file. I updated to Akeeba 5.1.0.b2 Pro, took a new backup, then restored it and everything worked fine.

The worry I am having is this: are all the backups I've taken while running Akeeba 5.0.4 corrupt and unusable?

You can still restore your backups! After extracting the backup using Kickstart please delete the files installation/platform/steps.php and installation/platform/iniprocess.php using FTP or your site's control panel before clicking the Run the Installation button.
