Unfortunately not. Using SFTP requires the ssh2 module for PHP since SFTP is file transfer over SSH. While there are libraries that emulate SSH using pure PHP code and no external dependencies they are several dozen to hundred time slower, making them unusable for the transfer of large files such as backup archives.

You can always try using FTPS. FTPS, unlike SFTP, is regular FTP transfer over an SSL connection. It's much like what HTTPS is to HTTP.

Also, I forgot to explicitly mention that the SSH2 module is already available for PHP 7. You do need to compile it yourself, i.e. it's not part of most Linux distributions' software repositories.
