I have been trying to update Joomla from 3.4.4 to 3.4.5 on the http://malejourney.ie website. When I start the process it runs a backup from the back end and eventually times out with a notification window being displayed with loads of text including some comments about Ajax and the update procedure then fails however when I go to look at Manage Backups it tells me that the backup has run successfully and it has been uploaded to Dropbox. However the error has stopped the update from happening.

I have attached the ZIPped log file to see if there is anything that is obvious.

Thanks.

(Sorry, title should read Back End not Front End)

The backup log didn't come through, so I can only guess what happened. I think the backup completed but the upload to Dropbox did not. If your backup is in multiple parts, you may have some on Dropbox and some on your site. This important thing is that you have a good backup.

You can disable the plugin "System - Backup on Update" to bypass the backup and update Joomla!.

But why is this only happening on back end backups, when Akeeba runs on cron every few days the files are successfully uploaded to DropBox and both front- and back-end backups are using exactly the same backup profile (there is only one profile created).

(Tried to attach the ZIP file again)

I'm only guessing about what is happening. If the log file is too big to attach, just throw it into Dropbox or on your site and give me a link so I can download it.

Dale

It is only 300KB (zipped) so not sure what the problem is but the link to the file in DropBox is https://www.dropbox.com/s/xdisajq5rmyiwvm/Akeeba%20Backup%20Debug%20Log.txt.zip?dl=0

Thanks

Back end backups and CRON backups use two different versions of PHP with different setups and different timeout rules, etc. A lot of the same code is used for the backups, but the environments can be very different. It isn't all that unusual to have trouble with one and not the other.

The backup does complete, the upload to Dropbox fails, as I guessed. Why it fails is not clear, there is no error, it looks like it uploads the first chunk and then just quits. Under Configuration, in the Dropbox setup, please change the chunk size from 20 to 5. That will reduce the chance of a timeout on your back end backup. That should not affect your CRON backup at all.

Thanks. That has worked fine now.

Cheers

You can try a chunk setting of 10, that would reduce the overhead a little bit, but increase the chance of a timeout. It isn't an exact science. Even the server load can slow the backup down enough to cause a timeout if you're too close to the limit.

Or, if it ain't broke, you can just not fix it. :-)
