The site has a cron job for a complete backup. Akeeba is configured to upload it to Amazon s3. It's been working fine for weeks. I have a good backup downloaded and tested.

Error message from the backend: Couldn't write to the archive file; check the output directory permissions and make sure you have enough disk space available.[len=991 / 14454]

Here is what I know:
--The directory for backups is 777
The ISP says I have more than adequate disk space.
--Alice says: Additional database - Wrong access details
Warning
Could not detect the used profile, test skipped Additional database - Joomla database inclusion
Warning Could not detect the used profile, test skipped
-- Akeeba backup check says backup failure

Steps I have taken:
-- checked s3 credentials
-- checked db credentials
-- adjusted the s3 part size down to 2
-- had a glass of wine and submitted ticket

The error message you pasted actually does come from PHP itself. PHP tells us that it could only write 991 of the 14,454 bytes we asked it to write to disk. Your host should check 1. if you have adequate disk space in your account quota 2. if you have enough inodes in your account quota 3. if the server's disk / storage array has adequate free space and 4. if the server's disk / storage array has adequate free inodes. Last time this happened to a client we found out that while he had adequate free space, the sheer amount of files on his account exceeded the inode quota on his account.

Please keep in mind that permissions, S3 configuration, database configuration and glass of wine do not have any effect on the nature of this issue :) (And thank you for the much needed giggle regarding the glass of wine comment!)
